the vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us.
death. old age. are words without a meaning. that paby us like the idea air which we regard not. others may have undergone, or may still be liable to them-we "bear a charmed life“, which laughs to scorn all such sickly fancies. as in setting out on delightful journey, we strain our eager gaze forward-
bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail!
and see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance; so, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations. nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them. we have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on so forever. we look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseleprogress; and feel in ourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age, and drop into the grave. it is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedneof our feelings in youth, that (so to speak) identifies us with nature, and (our experience being slight and our passions strong) deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it. our short-lives connection with existence we fondly flatter ourselves, is an indissoluble and lasting union-a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation. as infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us0we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more-objects prearound us, filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them, so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.

cherish what we are enjoying
it is a report about the new planet which holds possibility for life.
it shows that european astronomers have discovered a new planet, they name it gliese 581 c.
it is about 20.5 light years from our earth. they estimated the planet's average temperature at between 0 and 40 degrees centigrade. it is orbiting the red dwarf star, gliese 581.
most important of all, it’s an earth-like planet. there might be mountin, sea and liquid water.
so the astronomers believe that it is potentially habitable.
however, gliese 581 c might be 'tidally locked' to it’s sun-the dwarf star the way our moon is to the earth.
it means that it must always show its same face to its sun, and that while one side would be too fiercely hot to support life, the other side would be too cold.
this report makes me to realize that how valuable our earth is.
everyday, we can see sunrise and sunset.
the day and night keeps on e_changing. it’s not too hot in the daytime while not to cold at night.

good morning ladies and gentlemen:
the title of my speech today is 'the doors that are open to us '.
the other day my aunt paid me a visit. she was overjoyed. 'i got the highest mark in the mid-term e_amination!' she said. don’t be surprised! my aunt is indeed a student; to be e_act, a college student at the age of 45.
last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college. 'this was the wisest decision i have ever made,' she said proudly like a teenage girl. to her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.
'compared with the late 70s,' she says, 'now college students have many doors.' my aunt cannot help but recall her first college e_perience in 1978 when college doors began to be re-opened after the cultural revolution. she was assigned to study engineering despite her desire to study chinese literature, and a few years later, the government sent her to work in a tv factory.
i was shocked when she first told me how she (had) had no choice in her major and job. look at us today! so many doors are open to us! i believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. and my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all these opportunities.
the first door i see is the opportunity to study different kinds of subjects that interest us. my aunt said she was happy to study management, but she was also happy that she could attend lectures on ancient chinese poetry and on shakespearean drama. as for myself, i am english major, but i may also go to lectures on history. to me, if college education in the past emphasized specialization, now, it emphasizes free and well-round

ed development of each individual. so all the fine achievements of human civilization are open to us.
the second door is the door to the outside world. learning goes beyond classrooms and national boundaries. my aunt remembers her previous college days as monotonous and even calls her generation 'frogs in a well.' but today, as the world becomes a global village, it is important that our neighbors and we be open-minded to learn with and from each other. i have many fellow international classmates, and i am applying to an e_change program with a university abroad. as for my aunt, she is planning to get an mba degree in the united kingdom where her daughter, my cousin, is now doing her master’s degree in biochemistry. we are now taking the opportunity to study overseas, and when we come back, we’ll put to use what we have learnt abroad.
the third door is the door to lifelong learning. as new ideas appear all the time, we always need to acquire new knowledge, regardless of our age. naturally, my aunt herself is the best e_ample. many of my aunt’s contemporaries say that she is amazingly up-to-date for a middle-aged woman. she simply responds, 'age doesn’t matter. what matters is your attitude. you may think it’s strange that i am still going to college, but i don’t think i’m too old to learn.' yes, she is right. since the government removed the age limit for college admissions in __, there are already some untraditional students, sitting with us in the same classrooms. like these people, my aunt is old but she is very young in spirit. with her incredible energy and determination, she embodies both tradition and modernity.
the doors open to us also pose challenges. for instance, we are faced with the challenge of a balanced learning, the challenge of pre

serving our fine tradition while learning from the west, and the challenge of learning continuously while carrying heavy responsibilities to our work and family. so, each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgment, but with the support of my teachers, parents, friends and my aunt, i believe i can meet the challenge head on. when i reach my aunt’s age, i can be proud to say that i have walked through dozens of doors and will, in the remainder of my life, walk through many more. possibly i will go back to college, too.
thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

《全國英語演講比賽冠軍演講稿:the doors that are open to us》

economical globalization & development of china
good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, my name is zhang botao, i am from shaan_i university of science & technology.
when i stand here to deliver my speech, i’m a little worried about my cell phone and also yours. i’m afraid that one of them may suddenly ring loudly so that my fascinating speech will probably be interrupted by simens, nokia, motorola or panda. and this is just one possible result caused by economic globalization. no matter if you admit it or not, we are now all in a global village and economic globalization is here to stay.
nowadays, economic globalization is being referred to more and more. i don’t know who first invented the word, but undoubtedly, it is steadily and ine_orably becoming more and more common and important. it covers our world so quickly, just like influenza. as charles darwin noted: survival of the fittest. in order to adapt to this great and global reform, i think, there must be something important and urgent we need to do, for every nation, every corporation, and even to every person.
first, take me for an e_ample. just ten years ago, i did not know what a computer was, let alone what it can do. but since 2001, i cannot live without my computer, just like i can’t live without my cell phone! of course, these great changes are derived from economic globalization, and the rapid development of china. for every chinese man like me, these rapid changes mean great challenge: because of economic globalization, many new technologies rushed into china without translation; because of economic globalization, many unknown software appeared on our desks; and, because of the economic globalization, we must hasten our rhythm of living, working and even resting. the speed of the development of china has been tremendously accelerated, so if we don’t want to be elapsed from this great tidal wave of development, we must understand the meaning of this phrase very clearly: one is never too old to learn.
second, to an enterprise in china, it also means a problem concerning survival. our entrance to wto has paved the way for many super universal corporations to enter the economic market of china. this means the competition in our domestic market will be much more brutal than ever before. if our state enterprises and other companies don’t adjust to this global reform and get used to the more and more cruel competition, surely they will be elapsed in this blood-red economic battle. if you want your company to stand up at last, i think the most important thing for you to do is that, “firm your confidence and welcome the great coming challenge.”
third, as globalization is gradually knitting separate national economies into a single one, if one nation would like to stand up and develop during these global changes, it must effectively carry out some economical and political reforms. for e_ample, reducing the ta_ to attract more international organizations to invest in our country, or do some political reforms, to cater for some important international organizations. maintaining an average 8% economic increase rate per year needs not only effective and promising economic policy, but also the prudent leadership.
economic globalization brings us not only a great challenge, but also a great chance to develop. it brings us a great potential of international corporations and makes them take roots and develop in china. and this will create new job opportunities for our huge labor market. if we can strengthen ourselves and take the chance, i promise, china’s development will be hastened greatly, and china will become the leader of economic globalization of the world!

ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
i am chinese. i am proud of being a chinese with five thousand years of civilization behind. i've learned about the four great inventions made by our forefathers. i've learned about the great wall and the yangtze river. i've learned about zhang heng(張衡)and i've learned about zheng he(鄭和).who says the yellow river civilization has vanished(消失)?i know that my ancestors have made miracles(奇跡)on this fertile land and we're still making miracles. who can ignore the fact that we have established ourselves as a great state in the world, that we have devised our own nuclear weapons, that we have successfully sent our satellites into space, and that our gnp ranks no. 7 in the world? we have e_perienced the plunders (掠奪) by other nations, and we have e_perienced the war. yet, based on such ruins, there still stands our nation----china, unyielding and unconquerable!
i once came across an american tourist. she said, “china has a history of five thousand years, but the us only has a history of 200 years. five thousand years ago, china took the lead in the world, and now it is the us that is leading.”my heart was deeply touched by these words. it is true that we're still a developing nation, but it doesn't mean that we can despise (鄙視) ourselves. we have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. we have reasons to say proudly: we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition (雄心) is even bigger, our challenges (挑戰(zhàn)) are great, but our will is even greater.

my attitude towards to marks
for our students, marks is above everything. teachers will judge us from ourmarks. with marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. with marks, wecan be enrolled into senior middle schools. with marks we can be enrolled intocollege. with marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrine studies.still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad for furtherstudies. our parents will be strict with us with the marks. our society judge usfrom marks. however, sometimes we students compare one another with marksdirectly. we are completely controlled by marks. we like them and we feel sorryfor them. but what attitude towards our marks should we take?
truly, marks functions cannot be underestimated. in terms of test in ourstudy, marks are fair and real. that is the reason why we say "everyone is equalbefore marks. "
however, i think marks are the sole standard to judge the success or failureof students in exams. sometimes, marks more than ten or less than one or two inour exams comparing with others mean not everything. the success or failure inexams will be influenced by experience on the spot and the examinee’s healthetc. once in a while one cannot fail in exams. " success or failure is commonsense for military. " i think everyone is familiar with the famous saying. don’tyou think such will be the case with our study? in exams, one cannot be "never-defeated general" . even though one will be very good in everyday study,he cannot succeed in every exam sometimes. we can get proof from the fact thatthe very best one we call "number one scholar" in the entrance exams for collegeand ordinary middle school and specialized secondary school over the years isnot eminent above all others nor top student in every study.
as a matter of fact, "high marks" and "ability" are not unified. some timeago, a new phrase " high marks but poor competence" came into being. once ihappened to meet such a teacher as this .it is said that the teacher justgraduated from a far-famed key university. but his teaching result is much lessthan that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned college. whenlecturing, the teacher only repeated what the text-books says, which was verydull so the his students’ interest in learning was not aroused. his teaching wasshort of unity of teaching and learning. at present there is a fact that we knowa few brilliant and top college graduates are not qualified for their posts. thereason for it may be lack of the ability to combine knowledge learnt from bookswith pragmatics in their work. students of this kind will be successful in everyexam but they will be able to use freely their knowledge in their posts. don’tyou think it waste training such persons for the country?
to sum up from the above, i can say marks are not absolutely authoritativefor some. if we neglect training and developing the students’ ability andcompetence and if we only seek for the high marks, we will be absolutely wrong.we should take an objective attitude towards the marks. neither should weneglect them nor should we overvalue them like a god.

youth is a special life relay station ,the growth with the worry ,the life feeling become aware happily with the dream ,collected a unique youth melody in here .
we decide.we choose.and as we decide and choose,so are our lives formed.in the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about.and most importantly ,you are the one you choose to be.
it is easy to waste our lives ,our days ,our minutes .it is easy to exist than living .so hold fast to your dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird, that cannot fly.hold fast to your dreams, for when dreams go,life is a barren field, frozen with snow.

if we should ever accomplish anything in life, let us not forget that we must persevere.
if we would learn our lessons in school, we must be diligent and not give up whenever we come to anything difficult.
we shall find many of our lessons very hard, but let us consider that the harder they are the better they will do to us if we will persevere and learn them thoroughly.
but there are some among us who are ready to give up when they come to a hard example in mathematics, and say, "i can't do this."
they never will if they feel so.
i can't never did anything worth while; but i'll try accomplish wonders.
let us remember that we shall meet with difficulties all through life.
they are in the pathway of everyone.
if we will only try and keep trying, we shall be sure to conquer and overcome every difficulty we meet with.
if we have a hard lesson today, let us strive to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow.
and if we learn to master hard lessons in school, it will prepare us to overcome the hard things that we shall meet in life, when our school days are over.
